The bridge went at four. She heard it from the kitchen: a crack, then nothing. She put the kettle on.
elevated, detached, ironic
At approximately four o'clock the structure, having resisted the river for a century and the council for a decade, elected to resist neither.
lyrical, close, free indirect
Four o'clock, and the light already going. Was that the bridge? It couldn't be the bridge. The river had never sounded like that, like something giving up.

The voice is + прил.: spare, lush, detached, intimate, wry, deadpan
The voice is spare and detached.
The diction is …; favours +
The diction favours short Anglo-Saxon words.
The narrator keeps the reader at arm's length / close
—
The tone shifts from X to Y when …
The tone shifts from wry to tender when the child appears.
Ошибки новичков: the style is very good — назовите ось; the author uses simple words → the diction is plain; tone of voice (это о голосе физическом) → tone; distance of the narrator → narrative distance.
Тон описывают двумя прилагательными и оговоркой — «wry, and a little sad» — точнее, чем одним.
push_pinголос по четырём осям: diction (plain / elevated; Anglo-Saxon / Latinate; concrete / abstract), фраза (short / long), дистанция (first person; close third; detached; free indirect style), tone (wry, understated, lyrical, deadpan); три примера на ось; одно событие — три голоса

Plain diction: short words, concrete nouns — Anglo-Saxon words are short and physical: «begin», «bread», «cold».
Latinate diction sounds formal: «commence» for «begin».
A detached narrator reports without feeling; close third person shows only what she sees.
The tone is wry: amused and a little sad.
Free indirect style lets us hear her doubt without a «she thought».
An understated voice says «it was a bad year» about a war; a lyrical voice lingers on light and weather.
Each narrator has an idiolect — favourite words, tics.
lightbulbГолос: diction (Anglo-Saxon / Latinate; concrete / abstract), длина фразы, дистанция (first person, close third, detached, free indirect style), tone (wry, understated, lyrical, deadpan).
