Last month our college launched a «no plastic» week, and the results surprised everyone. The idea came from two students who counted the rubbish in the canteen: over 400 single-use cups and 150 plastic bottles a day. That's a huge amount of waste for a college of 900 people.
For one week, the canteen stopped selling drinks in plastic bottles and gave a 20p discount to anyone who brought their own cup. Tap water was free. Posters encouraged students to take a reusable bag from the shop instead of a plastic one, and the library printed on both sides of the paper.
Over 700 students took part. As a result, the canteen produced 60 % less plastic waste, and it saved money, because it bought fewer cups. Not everything worked: there weren't enough places to wash cups, and some students said the water fountain was too far from the canteen.
The college now plans to keep the discount and install two more water fountains. If the number of cups stays low, the canteen will stop buying single-use cups completely next year. Small changes, it seems, really make a difference — as long as they're easy.
