Событие и воспоминание: что известно из каждого рассказа
Рассказ о прошлом складывается из трёх слоёв: установленное (established: запись, протокол, фотография — the record shows), вспоминаемое (recollected: she recalls, by his account, an eyewitness), и переданное с чужих слов (hearsay: my uncle told me). На C2 их держат раздельно в самой грамматике: «the minutes state that the bridge closed at 9 pm» — факт с источником; «she recalls a crowd» — память, которая может тускнеть (memory fades) и заполнять пробелы правдоподобным. Независимое совпадение двух свидетелей подтверждает (corroborates) деталь; то, о чём нет ни записи, ни второго свидетеля, — undocumented.

Образец: The record shows the alarm sounded at 3.12. I remember it being dark, though sunset that day was at 3.40, so that must be reconstruction. Ошибки новичков: I remember that it was dark подаётся как факт → as I remember it; it should have been open (о догадке) → it must have been open; the record says → shows.
Нюансы
- the record — с определённым артиклем: «on record», «for the record», «the record shows».
- recall и remember — синонимы; recollect — формальнее; recollection — существительное для всех.
- by her account = according to her; «on her account» — «ради неё» — не путать.
- hearsay — юридический термин; в истории — «second-hand testimony».
- Очевидец — источник, чья надёжность оценивается; запись — тоже источник (протокол может врать), но иначе.
