My mother sold the house the week after the funeral, which people in the village took as a sign of something, though they disagreed about what.
I was fourteen and took it as a sign of nothing. Houses were sold; ours had been for sale, in a manner of speaking, since the spring, when my father had begun to talk about «afterwards» in a voice that made you look at the floor. Afterwards had arrived. The estate agent came on the Tuesday, a young man with a folder, and my mother walked him through the rooms as if she were showing him a museum in which she had once, briefly, been employed.
I remember the folder more clearly than the funeral. It was blue. He held it against his chest in the hall as though it might be taken from him, and when my mother said «and this was his study», he wrote something down, and I have wondered ever since what one writes down about a study.
The village said she was cold. The village said a great many things that spring — that the price was too low, that the buyers were from London, that she had not cried at the graveside, which was true — and my mother heard all of them and answered none, and packed the study last, alone, with the door shut, in a single afternoon.
I did not go in. I stood on the landing, where the boards give a little, and listened to her not crying through the door, and it was then, I think, that I understood the house was not being sold because he had died. It was being sold because he had not, for a long time, lived in it, and she had; and now she could stop.
We left on a Friday. She locked the door, and tried it, and locked it again, and did not look back, and I did, and the study window was open, which it never was, and I have never asked her why.

Commentary: the opening of «The House on West Lane»
The extract is narrated in the first person by the son, looking back at himself at fourteen, and the distance between the two selves is where the meaning lives. The retrospective narrator is not the author: his stance towards the village is wry («they disagreed about what»), and towards his mother it is something more careful, as evidenced by how little he claims to know about her.
The details are chosen with striking economy. The funeral itself is glossed over; what is foregrounded is the estate agent's folder — «It was blue.» — a telling detail that the narrator admits he remembers «more clearly than the funeral». The pacing follows the same logic: the funeral gets one clause, the packing of the study a paragraph, and the final departure a single run-on sentence in which «and … and … and» piles the locked door, the second locking and the open window into one breath the narrator cannot stop.
The village's voice enters without quotation marks — «The village said she was cold» — and the narrator neither endorses nor rejects it; the one claim he confirms, «which was true», is the one that sounds worst, and that honesty makes his mother's silence more powerful, not less.
On the surface, this is a house sale. Beneath it, the simile of the museum «in which she had once, briefly, been employed» suggests a woman who had stopped living in her own house long before her husband stopped living in it — a reading supported by the landing scene, where the narrator hears her «not crying» and understands that now «she could stop». Alternatively, the village is simply right and she is cold; but that reading is undercut by the one detail the narrator withholds an explanation for: the open study window, «which it never was». What is left unsaid — «I have never asked her why» — is the question the novel will presumably answer.
