- A personal essay argues through experience, and that idea resonates with me.Личное эссе доказывает через опыт, и эта мысль находит во мне отклик.
- I take issue with one claim: one anecdote doesn't prove a rule.Я оспорил бы одно утверждение: один случай не доказывает правило.
Текст: «Личное эссе: «Поздний старт»»
I learned to swim at thirty-four, in a public pool on Tuesday evenings, between a retired postman and a girl of nine. For the first month I was, without a doubt, the worst swimmer in the building. In retrospect, that month taught me more about learning than the previous thirty years had.
I used to believe that skills belonged to the people who had started early. I had grown up in a town without a pool, and I had turned that fact into a kind of identity: I was «not a swimmer», the way other people are «not a maths person». The phrase sounded like modesty. It was, to a large degree, an excuse — a way of never being a beginner in public.
What changed was not courage but arithmetic. A doctor told me, kindly, that my back would get worse unless I found a sport that did not involve impact, and swimming was the only one on the list I could afford. So I went, not driven by ambition, but by the sake of being able to carry shopping at sixty. That, I have come to realise, is how most adults start anything: not from inspiration but from a small, practical fear.
The first lesson was humiliating in an interesting way. I could not float. The instructor, a woman half my age, said something I have thought about since: «You are trying to be good at it. Try to be bad at it slowly.» I tend to think that was the most useful sentence anyone has said to me as an adult. Being bad slowly — doing the wrong thing at a speed where you can notice it — turned out to be the whole method.
By the third month I could swim a length; by the sixth, ten. I am not going to pretend this made me a swimmer; it made me someone who swims, which is a different and better thing. Having said that, I should qualify the moral. It is tempting to conclude that anyone can learn anything at any age. That is not to say they can't — but I had time, money for lessons, and a reason that would not go away. Take away any one of those and I would still be «not a swimmer», and still calling it modesty.
What resonates most, a year later, is not the swimming. It is that I no longer trust the phrase «I'm not a … person». Every time I hear it now — in myself or in a friend — I hear a retired postman doing slow, terrible breaststroke on a Tuesday, and getting a little less terrible each week.
Задание
Напишите связный ответ на идеи эссе (220–260 слов) для той же колонки: что в нём находит у вас отклик и почему (resonates with me, a case in point из вашего опыта); с чем вы не согласны или что уточнили бы (I take issue with …, I should qualify …, that's not to say …); ваш собственный опыт «позднего старта» или отказа от «I'm not a … person» — связь прошлого с настоящим (I used to …, I've come to realise, in retrospect); степень уверенности в выводе (I tend to think, to some extent, arguably); вывод с оговоркой (having said that; with one exception).

Reply: on being bad slowly
The essay resonates with me more than I expected, and not because of swimming. I used to say «I'm not a languages person», and I said it for twenty years, in exactly the modest tone the author describes. In retrospect it was an excuse of the same kind: a way of never being the slowest person in a room.
What rings truest is the arithmetic. I did not start German out of inspiration; I started because my partner's mother does not speak English, and I was tired of smiling at dinners. A case in point: my first lesson was a Tuesday evening, and I was, without a doubt, the worst student there. «Be bad at it slowly» is arguably the best description I have read of what a beginner actually has to do.
Having said that, I take issue with one thing, or rather I would qualify it. The author names three conditions — time, money and a reason — and I would add a fourth: somebody who does not mind watching you be bad. My teacher had that quality; my first teacher, years earlier, did not, and I stopped after a month. That's not to say the conditions the author lists are wrong; to some extent, a patient teacher is simply part of «money for lessons». But I tend to think it deserves its own name.
A year on, I can hold a slow, terrible conversation at dinner, and I have come to realise that «person who speaks German badly» is a better thing to be than «not a languages person». With one exception — my accent — I am at peace with being bad slowly.
lightbulbОтвет на эссе: что откликается (resonates with me, a case in point) → с чем спорите или что уточняете (take issue with, qualify, that's not to say) → свой опыт (used to, have come to realise, in retrospect) → вывод с оговоркой.
