Why the brain needs sleep
For most of the twentieth century, sleep was thought to be a kind of pause — a time when the brain simply switched off. That idea has now been abandoned. Over the past two decades, it has been shown that the sleeping brain is busy, and that one of its main jobs is to decide what we will remember.
The process is known as consolidation. During the day, new information is stored temporarily in a small region called the hippocampus — think of it as an inbox. At night, especially in deep sleep, the most useful items are transferred to the cortex, where long-term memories are kept, while much of the rest is discarded. In other words, sleep does not just protect memories; it sorts them.
The evidence comes from several sources. In one widely cited study, carried out at a German university, participants were taught a list of word pairs in the evening. Half were allowed to sleep; half were kept awake. The next morning, the sleep group recalled about 40 % more pairs. Similar effects have been found for skills such as playing a melody on a keyboard, which improved overnight without any extra practice.
Timing matters too. Learning followed by sleep within a few hours is remembered better than learning followed by a full day of other activity. This is why a short nap after studying is now thought to be more effective than an extra hour of revision. It is estimated that even a 20-minute nap can improve recall by 10–15 %, although the effect varies between people.
There are limitations. Most studies use small samples and simple tasks, and it is not yet known exactly how the brain chooses what to keep. But the main conclusion is clear enough: memory is made not only while we learn, but while we sleep. Students who cut their sleep to study longer may, quite literally, be throwing away what they have just learnt.

Задание

Напишите краткое изложение статьи (summary, 120–150 слов) своими словами, без копирования предложений: главная мысль (in a nutshell, the author argues that …); как работает процесс (is known as, is stored, is transferred, in other words); одно доказательство с числом (it was found that, participants were …); практический вывод и ограничение (is thought to, it is not yet known, one limitation is); используйте пассив и безличные обороты, не пересказывайте по абзацам подряд.

Образец ответа

In a nutshell, the author argues that sleep is not a pause but an active process in which the brain decides what to remember. The process is known as consolidation: during the day, new information is stored temporarily in the hippocampus, which the author compares to an inbox, and at night the most useful items are transferred to the cortex while the rest is discarded. In other words, memories are sorted as well as protected. The claim is supported by research: in a German study, participants who slept after learning word pairs recalled about 40 % more the next morning than those who were kept awake, and similar effects have been found for practical skills. Timing is also thought to matter, which is why a short nap after studying is now believed to be more effective than extra revision. One limitation is that most studies use small samples, and it is not yet known how the brain selects what to keep.

lightbulbSummary: главная мысль своими словами → механизм в пассиве (is known as, is stored, is transferred) → одно доказательство с числом → практический вывод (is thought to) → ограничение. Не копировать предложения.
