Why some learners keep going
Every January, language schools fill up. By March, half of the seats are empty. Researchers at a British university have been following 400 adult learners for three years to find out what separates those who keep going from those who drop out — and the answers are not what most people expect.
Motivation, it turns out, matters less than routine. «Everyone who signed up was motivated,» says Dr Ruth Evans, who led the study. «The difference was whether they had built learning into a fixed part of the day. The learners who studied for twenty minutes every morning made considerably more progress than those who did three hours at the weekend — even though the weekend group had put in more time in total.»
The second finding concerns plateaus. Almost every learner in the study hit one, usually between the fourth and eighth month, when progress seemed to stop. Those who dropped out largely did so during this period. Those who stayed had one thing in common: they changed something. Some switched from textbooks to podcasts; others found a conversation partner; one man started reading football news in Spanish. «What worked was not a particular method,» says Evans, «but the decision to try a different one.»
Thirdly, the researchers found that learners who kept a record of small results — words they had learnt, conversations they had managed — were far less likely to give up. «Progress is slow and mostly invisible,» Evans explains. «A record makes it visible.»
The study is not without limits: the learners were all volunteers, and most were learning European languages. But its main message is relatively simple. If you have been studying for months and feel stuck, you have probably reached the point where most people stop. The ones who come out the other side are not the most talented. They are the ones who changed their approach and kept going.
