Интерпретация с опорой: цитата → прочтение → поддержка → альтернатива
Интерпретация без цитаты — мнение; цитата без интерпретации — пересказ. Схема анализа: цитата (quote the phrase — короткая, точная), прочтение (the text suggests …; this points to …), поддержка второй деталью (as evidenced by; a reading supported by), альтернатива (alternatively …) и, если есть, подрыв (undercut: деталь, которая мешает простому прочтению). Это и есть close reading: от одного предложения к смыслу.

Ошибки новичков: As the author says: «…» → the narrator / the text; This proves that she will return → suggests; цитата без прочтения (пересказ) или прочтение без цитаты (мнение). Сравните с русским: у нас кавычки «ёлочки», по-английски “…” или ‘…’, точка внутри при полной фразе.
Нюансы
- as evidenced by — официальный оборот; в речи — you can see it in …
- the text suggests — субъект «текст», не «автор»: это и точнее, и осторожнее.
- undercut — «подрывать снизу»; о финале, оценке, впечатлении.
- close reading — метод: одно предложение, каждое слово; не «внимательное чтение» вообще.
- Альтернатива усиливает прочтение, если вы показываете, почему она слабее.
