Культурное пояснение: справка без стереотипов
Когда отсылка не сработает у аудитории, нужна справка (gloss): короткая, фактическая, без снисходительности и без обобщений о «народе». Три инструмента: назвать источник и суть (for readers unfamiliar with the rhyme: …), дать сопоставление (roughly the equivalent of; comparable to — с оговоркой, что сопоставление приблизительно), объяснить функцию в контексте (in context, the phrase means …). Запрещено: стереотип вместо объяснения («the British love queues»), обобщение о людях вместо факта о тексте, и снисходительный тон (condescend). Правило: assume no prior knowledge, but don't condescend.

Нюансы
- roughly the equivalent of — всегда с «roughly» или «the nearest»: эквивалентов между культурами нет.
- comparable to — сопоставим по роли, не по сути: «comparable to Pushkin» — о месте в культуре.
- condescend — «снисходить»; condescending — снисходительный; признак: объяснение того, что аудитория знает.
- «Local knowledge» — не только страна: город, профессия, поколение.
- Справка о тексте, не о людях: «the reference is to …», а не «people there are …».
