Несовпадающие версии: факты, детали и оценки
Две версии одного события расходятся на трёх уровнях, и их нельзя смешивать. Факты (что произошло, когда, кто): расхождение здесь — discrepancy, которую нужно либо согласовать (reconcile: одна из версий о другом моменте), либо признать несовместимой (irreconcilable). Детали (цвет фургона, число людей): расхождение ожидаемо, память ненадёжна в деталях, и это не подрывает факт. Оценки (было ли предупреждение «проигнорировано»): расхождение — не ошибка памяти, а разница точек зрения, и его сохраняют как две позиции. Плюс — умолчания: о чём не говорит ни одна версия (neither mentions).

Ошибки новичков: согласовывать оценки как факты («на самом деле виноват…»); The accounts are different in → differ on; A says that police came first but B says ambulance — без артиклей и структуры; It is impossible to know → this cannot be resolved from the accounts.
Нюансы
- differ on / about — о предмете; differ from — от чего-то (её версия differs from протокола).
- diverge — сильнее differ; о развитии в разные стороны.
- reconcile — с условием (if she means …); без условия — «cannot be reconciled».
- nothing turns on it — «от этого ничего не зависит»; полезно для деталей.
- Расхождение в оценках — не решают голосованием: обе позиции остаются в реконструкции (урок 10).
