Интерпретация: одни данные — два прочтения (small but real vs too small to matter). Первое, что делает читатель C2, — определяет место спора (locate): at issue is …; the crux is …; there is consensus on X, the camps dispute Y.
|---|---|---|---|
| вопрос | стороны используют одно слово в разных смыслах | the framing · they answer different questions · talk past each other | One camp asks «does screen time harm?», the other «is screen time associated with lower well-being?» — different questions. |
| метод | спор о данных, выборке, измерении, расчёте | methodological · measured by · the sample · the model | Self-reported hours vs device logs; cross-sectional vs longitudinal. |
| интерпретация | данные одни, вывод разный | same data, two interpretations · read the effect as · the crux is | A correlation of 0.04: «small but real across millions» vs «too small to guide policy». |
| факт | редко: расходятся сами числа | the figures themselves differ · nobody disputes | Nobody disputes the correlation; they dispute its meaning. |
|---|---|
| At issue is not X but Y. | At issue is not whether there is an effect but how large it is. |
| The crux of the disagreement is … | The crux is whether a small effect in a large population matters. |
| There is consensus on X; the camps divide on Y. | There is consensus on the direction of the association; the camps divide on its size and cause. |
| They dispute X, not Y. | They dispute the meaning of the correlation, not its existence. |
| Much of the debate is methodological. | Much of the debate is methodological: self-report against logs. |
| They talk past each other because … | They talk past each other because «screen time» means hours to one and content to the other. |
| лагерь A | лагерь B | |
|---|---|---|
Does heavy screen use harm adolescent mental health? | How large is the association, compared with other factors? |
| метод | large surveys, self-reported hours, cross-sectional; focuses on heavy users | same surveys, all users, many model specifications; compares with e.g. eating potatoes |
| интерпретация | a consistent negative association is a warning sign | an effect this small is not a basis for policy |
| консенсус | the association exists and is negative; it is small; causation is not established | |
| A: «вредит ли экран сну?»; B: «вредит ли вечерний экран подросткам?» | The two sides are addressing different questions. |
| A: самоотчёт; B: датчики сна | The dispute is methodological: self-report versus measurement. |
They agree on the data but differ on what it means. |
|---|---|---|
| The disagreement is not about X but about Y | The disagreement is not about the figures but about their importance. | |
| At issue is … | At issue is whether 20 minutes matters. | |
| Once we separate X from Y, … | Once we separate the method from the conclusion, the gap narrows. | |
| The apparent contradiction dissolves when … | The apparent contradiction dissolves when we note the different age groups. | |
The scientists argue about the truth → argue about the method / the interpretation; the question of the dispute → the point at issue; They disagree in → disagree on / about.
- at issue — «предмет спора»; not at issue — «не оспаривается»; не путать с «an issue» (проблема).
- the crux — из латинского «крест»; the crux of the matter.
- talk past each other — не оскорбление, а диагноз: разные вопросы.
push_pinlocate the dispute: вопрос (framing; talk past each other), метод (methodological; measured by; sample; model), интерпретация (same data, two readings; the crux), факт (редко); at issue is not X but Y; consensus on X, the camps dispute Y; уровень спора подсказывает, что его решит

- At issue is not whether there is an effect but how large — the crux is the size, not the existence.
- The two camps talk past each other: one means hours, the other means content.
- The disagreement is methodological, not factual; same data, two interpretations.
- Each camp cites the same survey, and the framing decides the answer: «harm» or «association»?
- There is consensus on the direction, not on the size.
- Nobody disputes the correlation; they dispute its meaning.
- Locate the disagreement before you take sides.
