Mary Cole, who founded the Riverside Folk Festival, was born in 1938 in a fishing village in Cornwall. She grew up in a family of musicians: her father played the fiddle, and by the age of ten she had learnt over a hundred traditional songs from her grandmother.
In 1960 she moved to Leeds to work as a teacher. She was homesick, and she noticed that the old songs were dying out — the younger generation didn't use to sing them any more. So in 1971 she organised a small concert in the school hall. Only forty people came. By the time the tenth festival took place in 1981, the audience had grown to five thousand.
Mary devoted the rest of her life to the festival. She never took a salary, and she passed the organisation on to a group of volunteers in 2005. «What struck me at the first concert,» she said in an interview, «was that people cried. They had forgotten how much the songs meant to them.»
Mary Cole died in 2019. Looking back, the festival is her legacy: it now takes place every August, and thirty thousand people take part. The Sunday evening, when everyone sings her favourite song together, is still the highlight.
