- A briefing for the committee; an explainer for residents — an explainer answers «what does this mean for me?»Сводка для комитета; пояснение для жителей; пояснительный текст отвечает на «что это значит для меня?»
- Write parallel versions from one core, then audit them against each other; register-appropriate is not the same as dumbed down.Пишите параллельные версии из одного ядра, потом проверяйте их друг против друга; уместный по регистру — не то же, что упрощённый.
Текст: «Пакет источников: экранное время — и два адресата»
Core (from the systematic review, 2024): pooled association between self-reported screen time and well-being in adolescents 10–19: r = −0.05 (95 % CI −0.07 to −0.03), from 84 studies. Larger for self-reported than logged use (−0.07 vs −0.02); larger in cross-sectional than longitudinal designs; in 11 longitudinal studies the association is near zero and unstable in direction. Restricting to heavy users (inconsistently defined) raises the estimate to −0.09. No threshold found. The data are consistent with a small effect of screens, with reverse causation, and with confounding by sleep. They do not warrant population-level limits; they do warrant better measurement. Clinicians may reasonably ask about screen use as one factor among several.
Comparison figures (same review): sleep duration and well-being r ≈ 0.15; bullying and well-being r ≈ −0.20.
Audience 1: the school governors, who must decide next month whether to adopt a whole-school phone ban.
Audience 2: parents at the school, who read the local paper's headline «Phones are making our children ill» last week.
What must be identical in both versions: the size of the association and its basis (small; 84 studies; self-report vs logged); the longitudinal caveat; the heavy-user figure with its definitional caveat; the absence of a threshold; the three explanations the data are consistent with; the comparison with sleep and bullying; the review's own conclusion on limits and measurement.
What may differ: terminology, sentence structure, examples, what comes first, the «so what».
Задание
Напишите две версии (всего 320–360 слов) по одному ядру: (1) сводка для попечителей (briefing, ~170 слов): результат первым, термины как в области (pooled association, effect size, self-report vs logged, longitudinal, confounding), цифры с интервалом и основой, сравнение со сном и травлей, вывод обзора о том, для чего данные дают основания, и что это значит для решения о запрете (the decision question); (2) пояснение для родителей (explainer, ~170 слов): вопрос первым, заголовок газеты разобран (association ≠ making ill), число переведено (a hundred teenagers in a line), одно определение (what «heavy user» means and why the figure is shaky), оговорка простыми словами, сравнение со сном, «и что?» для родителя. После обеих — три строки аудита эквивалентности: сила утверждения, кванторы, оговорки — совпадают ли.

BRIEFING FOR GOVERNORS — phone policy and the evidence
Finding. The best available synthesis (systematic review, 2024; 84 pooled studies) puts the association between self-reported screen time and adolescent well-being at r = −0.05 (95 % CI −0.07 to −0.03): small and negative. The estimate is larger for self-reported than for logged use (−0.07 vs −0.02) and larger in cross-sectional than longitudinal designs; in the 11 longitudinal studies it is near zero and unstable in direction. Restricting to heavy users raises it to −0.09, but «heavy» is defined inconsistently across studies. No threshold of hours was found.
Interpretation. The data are consistent with a small causal effect, with reverse causation (low mood → more use), and with confounding by sleep. For proportion: sleep duration (r ≈ 0.15) and bullying (r ≈ −0.20) show associations three to four times larger.
Decision question. The review states the data do not warrant population-level limits and do warrant better measurement. A whole-school ban is a population-level limit. If governors adopt one, the evidence base is not this review; it would need to be behavioural (classroom disruption), which this pack does not address.
EXPLAINER FOR PARENTS — what the research actually says
Are phones making our children ill? Last week's headline said so; the research it was based on does not. The largest review to date — 84 studies — finds a small link between how much time teenagers say they spend on screens and how they say they feel. Picture a hundred teenagers lined up by well-being: knowing their screen hours would explain less than one in a hundred of the differences between them. Knowing how much they sleep explains about two; knowing whether they are bullied, about four.
Two things to hold on to. First, «link» is not «cause»: the studies that follow the same teenagers over time find almost nothing, and low mood may lead to more screen use rather than the other way round. Second, the figure for «heavy users» is higher but shaky, because every study defines «heavy» differently. Nobody has found a number of hours where harm suddenly starts.
What this means for you: if you have one hour of attention, ask about sleep first. Ask about the phone too — as one thing among several, not the thing.
Audit: strength — «association», «consistent with», never «cause» or «harm» in either ✓; quantifiers — «small», «near zero», «heavy users inconsistently defined» in both ✓; caveats — self-report vs logged, longitudinal, no threshold, three explanations, sleep/bullying comparison — present in both ✓.
