Few topics divide parents and teachers as sharply as homework. Supporters see it as essential practice; opponents see it as stress without benefit. This essay considers both positions before reaching a conclusion.
Those in favour of abolishing homework make two main points. First, the evidence for its benefit in primary schools is weak: a widely cited review of 180 studies found almost no link between homework and achievement for children under eleven. A case in point is Finland, whose pupils have among the lightest homework loads in Europe and among the highest results. Second, homework widens inequality. Whereas some children have a quiet desk and a parent who can help, others do not; the same task, therefore, rewards circumstances rather than effort.
On the other hand, those who defend homework argue that it builds habits which matter later. Although the effect is small at primary level, it grows steadily through secondary school, where the same review found a clear benefit for older pupils. Furthermore, homework is often the only regular link between school and home: it shows parents what their children are learning. Critics who point to Finland, it could be argued, overlook the fact that Finnish teachers are more highly trained and classes are smaller — the light homework load is a result of that system, not its cause.
In my view, the disagreement is really about age and design rather than homework itself. Given that the benefit is weak for young children and real for teenagers, it follows that primary schools should set little or none, while secondary schools should set homework that is short, purposeful and marked. Despite the strength of feeling on both sides, this is a conclusion that most teachers and parents could, on balance, accept.

Напишите эссе (essay, 190–230 слов) на тему «Should companies allow employees to work from home full-time?»: вступление с обозначением спора; абзац «за» с причиной и релевантным примером (the main reason is that, a case in point); абзац «против» с уступкой и изъяном (although / even though, admittedly, this overlooks, the flaw in this argument); сопоставление (whereas, on the other hand, by contrast); свой вывод с логической связкой (given that, it follows that, therefore, on balance, all things considered) и despite / in spite of хотя бы один раз.

Should companies allow employees to work from home full-time?
Since 2020, remote working has moved from an exception to a normal option, and the question is no longer whether it works but whether it should be the default. This essay weighs both sides.
Supporters of full-time home working make a strong case. The main reason is time: the average commute in Britain is nearly an hour a day, which employees now spend working or resting. A case in point is a large insurance firm that went fully remote in 2021 and reported no fall in output and a 30 % drop in staff leaving. Furthermore, companies save on offices, whereas employees save on travel.
Opponents, on the other hand, point to what is lost. Although output can be measured, learning cannot: junior staff who never sit next to experienced colleagues pick up less, and admittedly the firm above hired almost no graduates that year. It could also be argued that innovation depends on unplanned conversations. This overlooks, however, the fact that most «unplanned» conversations happen among people who already work together; the flaw in the argument is that it treats the office as the only place where ideas meet.
In my view, both sides describe real effects. Given that experienced staff lose little and junior staff lose a lot, it follows that the answer depends on the person rather than the company. Therefore, despite the appeal of a single rule, companies should allow full-time home working for experienced employees and require regular office days for those still learning. All things considered, that is a fairer compromise than either extreme.
