There is a pothole on Mill Road that has now been with us for fourteen months, and I think it is time somebody spoke up for it.
It is not, as some residents have unkindly said, «a hazard». It is a landmark. Visitors ask for directions by it. It has been photographed more often than the war memorial, and unlike the war memorial it has been mentioned in council minutes on eleven separate occasions, which is more than most of us can say. On each occasion the council has agreed that it is «a priority», and I for one find it reassuring to live in a town with such firm priorities.
Critics point out that the pothole has grown. This is true, and I would ask them to consider what else in Northfield has grown in fourteen months. Not the number of buses. Not the library's opening hours. Not, despite the sign that has stood outside it since 2023, the new leisure centre. The pothole, alone among the council's projects, has exceeded its targets, and it has done so without a consultation, a feasibility study or a single extra penny of public money. If that is not value for money, I don't know what is.
Some will say a road is not the place for a monument. To them I say: name a better one. The pothole is exactly where the council's attention is not, and a monument to absence belongs, surely, in the absence itself. A small plaque would suffice — «Priority, 2024» — and a low fence, for the cyclists.
I am aware that this column will be read as an attack on the council. Nothing could be further from my mind. The council has done what it does best, which is to agree, minute and defer; and the pothole has done what it does best, which is to wait. Between them they have produced fourteen months of perfect stability. Who among us can say the same of our own affairs?
So leave the pothole. Fill in the leisure centre instead — the hole where it was going to be is considerably larger, and nobody has photographed it once.

The column is satire: it praises a pothole in order to attack the council. The target is not the road or the residents but the council's habit of agreeing that something is «a priority» and then doing nothing — the writer's real point is that fourteen months of inaction is itself the scandal.
Almost every sentence is not to be taken literally. When the writer calls the pothole «a landmark», the mismatch between the word and the object signals irony: a hole is being described as if it were a monument. «I for one find it reassuring to live in a town with such firm priorities» means the opposite — the «priorities» have produced no repair in eleven council meetings. What the column actually recommends is straightforward: fill the pothole, and explain what happened to the leisure centre. A plausible reading is that the writer is more angry about the centre than the road; alternatively, the pothole is simply the easiest symbol. Either way, nothing in the piece is a genuine defence of a hole in Mill Road.
