When Northgate Academy installed facial recognition in its canteen in September, it expected a faster lunch queue. It got a public argument instead.
The head teacher, Ms Patel, told parents that the system would cut queuing time by half and that no images were stored — the camera, she said, converted each face into a code and deleted the picture within a second. She pointed out that parents had been asked for consent and that 84 % had agreed, and she stressed that any pupil could opt out and pay by card instead.
A group of parents, led by David Wood, disagreed. Mr Wood claimed that the consent form had been misleading: it had asked whether parents wanted «a faster lunch service», he said, not whether they agreed to biometric data being collected. He urged the school to pause the system and warned that once children were used to being scanned, they would stop asking why. He also asked why a canteen needed a technology that most banks did not use.
The supplier, ScanServe, insisted that its system met all legal requirements and denied storing any images. However, it conceded that face codes were kept for the length of a pupil's time at the school, and it admitted that the data was held on servers outside the UK.
The regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office, said it had written to the school and advised it to carry out a full data-protection assessment before continuing. It did not order the system to be switched off, but it reminded schools that consent from parents must be «specific and informed».
The school has now suspended the cameras until January. Ms Patel said she still believed the system was safe but accepted that the consent form should have been clearer. Mr Wood said he was «not against technology, only against not being asked properly».
