Aim. To turn the derelict plot behind Mill Street into a community garden with forty allotment beds, a shared orchard and a small classroom for the two local primary schools. The garden is intended to be self-funding by year three through bed rents and workshops.
Phases and timeline.
Phase one (April–September): site clearance, soil testing and planning permission. Clearance is under way and will have been completed by the end of May. Soil results are due in June; planning permission is the main dependency, as phase two cannot start until it has been granted. As things stand, the decision is expected in August.
Phase two (October–March): beds, paths and water supply. Work will be running through the winter, in parallel with fundraising for the classroom. By the end of March forty beds will have been built and allocated.
Phase three (April–September next year): the orchard and the classroom. The classroom hinges on a £30,000 grant, for which we apply in November; should the grant fall through, the classroom will be postponed and the orchard brought forward.
Risks and contingencies. The project has three risks: planning permission (a delay of up to six months is possible — we have allowed for it by scheduling the beds after the winter), contamination in the soil (in the event of a positive test, raised beds will be used instead, at extra cost), and slow uptake of the beds (the worst-case scenario is twenty-five beds let in year one; the budget still works at that level).
Status. The project is on track. Costs are within budget. All dates are subject to change following the planning decision.

Mill Street Community Garden — progress update, 30 September
Completed. Site clearance was completed on 24 May, a week ahead of schedule. The soil test came back in June: one corner of the plot is contaminated, so raised beds will be used there, as set out in the contingency plan. Planning permission was granted on 12 September — a month later than expected.
In progress. The water supply is currently being installed, and we are recruiting volunteers for the winter work. Fundraising for the classroom has begun; the grant application will be submitted in November as planned.
Changes. In light of the late planning decision, the timeline for phase two has slipped by four weeks: bed construction will now start in November rather than October. We have not had to scale anything back, because the winter buffer allowed for exactly this delay. However, the raised beds add £4,000 to costs, which we'll cover from the reserve.
Looking ahead. By the end of March we will still have built and allocated forty beds; path-laying and fundraising will be running in parallel from January. Should the grant fall through, the classroom will be postponed and the orchard brought forward, as agreed.
Next steps: confirm the contractor by 15 October; open bed applications on 1 November. Status: on track, four weeks behind the original phase-two date, within budget. All dates remain subject to change.
