Adapting a novel that is mostly weather and silence is either brave or foolish, and for its first hour «The North Garden» is brave. The director, Sarah Lindqvist, sets out to do something specific: to film a book about waiting without making the audience wait. Judged on those terms, the film succeeds for sixty minutes and then loses its nerve.
What impressed me most was the opening. Lindqvist replaces the novel's forty pages of back-story with a single wordless sequence — a woman walking the length of a frozen garden, checking each dead plant — and it is this sequence, rather than any line of dialogue, that tells us who she is. The craft is faultless: the camera never moves faster than she does. A recurring image, her breath in the cold, reads as the only sign of life in the place, and the sound design bears this out — for twenty minutes, breath is the loudest thing we hear.
The performance at the centre is understated to the point of stillness, and it works. Anna Berg plays the widow as a woman who has decided not to decide, and what she does with her hands — always busy, never purposeful — says more than the script gives her to say. It is a compelling piece of acting precisely because it refuses to ask for our sympathy.
Where the film parts company with itself is the second half. The novel's brother arrives, and with him arrives dialogue, and the film that had trusted us to watch begins to explain. A subplot about the sale of the house, absent from the book, is heavy-handed: every conversation is about money, and the money is a metaphor, and we are told so twice. The pacing, so sure in the first hour, sags; the last act resolves things the novel leaves open, and the resolution feels contrived — a letter, of all things, found in a drawer.
For all its second-half faults, the film is worth seeing for its first hour alone, and for Berg. It is unlikely to appeal to readers who loved the book's refusal to explain; for anyone who found the novel too austere, this is the more generous version — generous, in the end, to a fault. Verdict: an accomplished, uneven adaptation that trusts its audience for exactly as long as it can bear to.

Review: «Half-Light», an album by The Tidewater Band
«Half-Light» sets out to do one thing: to make a quiet record in a loud year, and judged on its own terms it largely succeeds. The intention is clear from the first track, which opens with forty seconds of room noise before a single guitar enters; it is that patience, rather than any melody, that tells you what kind of album this will be.
What impressed me most was the restraint of the production. Nothing is doubled, nothing is layered, and the singer is recorded close enough that you hear her breathe between lines. A recurring sound — a clock somewhere in the room — reads as a deliberate motif rather than an accident; I take it to mean that the record is about time passing unused, and the lyrics bear this out: three songs mention waiting, none mentions arriving.
The execution is not flawless. The middle of the album is uneven, to say the least: tracks five and six are a touch derivative, borrowing a chord sequence so familiar that the restraint starts to sound like a lack of ideas. And the closing song, where strings suddenly appear, is heavy-handed — the one moment the record tells us how to feel, and the one moment it fails to.
For all its mid-album faults, «Half-Light» is worth hearing for the first three tracks alone, which are utterly compelling in their refusal to hurry. It is unlikely to appeal to anyone who wants a chorus by the first minute; for anyone who has ever liked a record more on the third listen than the first, this is essential. If anything, it is too modest about its own strengths.
Verdict: an understated, accomplished album that trusts silence for exactly as long as it should.
