On 3 March Northfield Council voted 7–5 to close the Riverside swimming pool in September. Below are the opening paragraphs of three reports published the next morning.
REPORT A — regional news agency
Northfield Council has voted to close Riverside swimming pool from 30 September, citing a £310,000 annual deficit and an estimated £1.2 million repair bill for the roof. The decision was carried by seven votes to five. The council said it would «explore alternative provision», including transport to the pool at Ashford, eight miles away. Campaigners, who collected 4,200 signatures against closure, said they would seek a judicial review. The pool opened in 1974 and had 61,000 visits last year.
REPORT B — local newspaper
Riverside pool is to close after councillors voted through the plan in the face of one of the biggest protests the town has seen. More than 4,000 residents signed a petition, and the public gallery was full as the vote was taken. Campaigners described the decision as «a betrayal of the town's children» and pointed out that the nearest alternative is eight miles away with no direct bus after 6 pm. The council leader insisted the £1.2 million roof bill left «no realistic choice». Councillors who voted against the closure claimed a cheaper repair option had not been properly costed.
REPORT C — council press release
Following a full review of leisure provision, Northfield Council has agreed a sustainable plan for swimming that will see Riverside pool close at the end of September and resources redirected to a new partnership with Ashford Leisure Centre. The council will subsidise transport for school swimming and will consult residents on a community transport scheme. The council leader said the plan «protects swimming for the next generation» in the face of a roof repair bill that could not be justified. The council thanks residents for their engagement during the consultation.

Comparative review: three reports of the Riverside pool closure
All three reports agree on the bare facts: Northfield Council has decided to close Riverside pool at the end of September, and the roof repair bill of £1.2 million is given as the main reason. Beyond that, the common ground narrows quickly.
The reports differ most in what they lead with. The agency report (A) leads with the decision and the figures — the deficit, the vote, the visitor numbers — and attributes the plan to seek a judicial review to campaigners. The local paper (B) leads with the protest: it foregrounds the petition and the full gallery, and it uses loaded language, quoting campaigners who described the decision as «a betrayal». The council's release (C) plays down the closure altogether, framing it as «a sustainable plan for swimming» — a euphemism — and leads with the partnership and transport subsidy.
Each report omits something. C makes no mention of the size of the vote or the petition. A leaves out the bus problem after 6 pm, which B reports. B, for its part, omits the transport subsidy that C announces. Only B reports the claim, attributed to councillors who voted against closure, that a cheaper repair option was not properly costed; neither A nor C addresses it.
As for verbs, A is neutral (said, would seek); B has the leader «insisting» and opponents «claiming»; C quotes only the leader. What remains unknown is whether a cheaper repair was ever costed and whether the transport scheme will run in the evenings — the jury is still out on both.
