Текст: «Статья: «Пять привычек, которые изменят вашу жизнь — и почему четыре из них не изменят»»
Every January the same list appears: get up at five, take cold showers, cut out sugar, meditate for twenty minutes, walk ten thousand steps. I have tried all five. Here is what I have learnt — and where I think the advice goes wrong.
Getting up at five worked for exactly nine days. I remember feeling heroic on day one and drained by day six; by day nine I had stopped setting the alarm. The advice assumes that everyone is an early riser waiting to be released. In my experience — and, more importantly, in the sleep research the columnists rarely cite — about a third of adults are night owls, and forcing them to rise early costs sleep, not laziness. The habit holds true for some; it is sold to all.
Cold showers I still take, and I swear by them. But I started them the same month I began walking to work, and I cannot tell you which one improved my mood. Correlation is not causation, and one man's bathroom is not a study.
Cutting out sugar completely meant reading every label, which I did for three weeks before I stopped bothering. What survived was a smaller change: I stopped keeping biscuits in the house. Try doing that before you try to give up sugar for ever.
Meditation I regret abandoning. Ten minutes was fine; the twenty demanded by the apps was the problem. The evidence here is actually good — dozens of studies, not one — but the dose in the headlines overstates what the research tested.
The steps, finally, are the one habit I would defend without conditions, and the one with the least glamorous evidence: more walking is better than less, for almost everyone, at almost any age. Nobody sells a course in it.
My conclusion is not that habits don't work. It is that the list applies a single prescription to eight billion different bodies, and calls the failures a lack of willpower. Pace yourself. Change one thing. And don't mistake a habit that suits a columnist for a cure that suits you.
Задание
Напишите аргументированный отзыв на статью (response, 190–230 слов): кратко изложите её главную мысль (the author argues that …); с чем согласны и почему, с примером из своего опыта, честно помеченным как личный (in my experience, that's personal experience, not evidence); с чем не согласны (I take issue with …, the flaw is …, this overlooks …), с проверкой границ (applies to, correlation / causation, overstates); используйте не меньше четырёх пар глаголов темы (stop / remember / try / regret + -ing / to); закончите своим выводом о том, как менять привычки.

A response to «Five habits that will change your life»
The author argues that the January list of habits fails not because habits don't work but because one prescription is sold to everyone, with failure blamed on willpower. On the whole, I agree, and the article is unusually honest about the limits of its own evidence.
The early-rising section rang true. I tried to become a morning person for two years and remember feeling drained rather than heroic; I stopped setting the alarm last spring and have slept better since — though that is personal experience, not evidence, and I also changed jobs at the same time. The point about correlation and causation applies to my case as much as to the author's cold showers.
I take issue, however, with the section on walking. «Better for almost everyone» is probably true, but the article overstates the certainty: the ten-thousand-step figure came from a marketing campaign, not research, and the benefit flattens well below it. The flaw is the same one the author criticises elsewhere — a number presented as a prescription.
What I regret not reading is a word about sleep itself, which the author treats as the cost of early rising rather than a habit in its own right. Try going to bed earlier before you try to get up earlier.
My conclusion follows the author's: change one thing, keep it sustainable, and don't mistake a columnist's habit for your own cure.
lightbulbОтзыв на статью: главная мысль → согласие с честно помеченным опытом (personal experience, not evidence) → несогласие с проверкой границ (take issue with, overstates, applies to) → пары глаголов → вывод.
