Northgate bus changes «will cut journey times», says operator
From 4 November the number 12 bus will run every twelve minutes instead of every twenty, the operator Northgate Buses announced yesterday. The company says the change will cut average journey times to the station by up to eight minutes and add 40 % more seats at peak times. The new timetable will also remove the stop at Mill Street, which the company describes as «little used». A spokesperson said the changes had been «welcomed by passengers» in a survey. Fares will rise by 10p from the same date. The council, which part-funds the route, declined to comment.
MATERIAL 2 — Transcript of a phone call, 6 October (Alex, parents' group; Diane Wood, Northgate Buses)
Alex: Thanks for calling back. Two questions. First, «up to eight minutes» — what's the typical saving?
Diane: Honestly, about three to four minutes for most journeys. Eight is the best case, from the far end of the route.
Alex: And the Mill Street stop — «little used» — do you have numbers?
Diane: About 90 boardings a day, mostly the school run. The next stop is 400 metres away. I should say the council asked us to keep it and we said we couldn't without losing the twelve-minute frequency; that's not in the press release.
Alex: The survey — how many passengers?
Diane: Two hundred and ten responses, online. Seventy per cent were in favour of the frequency change. We didn't ask about Mill Street specifically.
Alex: So «welcomed by passengers» is the frequency, not the stop.
Diane: That's fair. And one more thing, for your information: the fare rise was decided separately and would have happened anyway.
Alex: Understood. Can I quote you on the Mill Street figures?
Diane: You can — they're in our filing to the council, so they're public.
Задание
Напишите сводное сообщение (180–220 слов) для председателя родительского комитета, которая не читала ни заметку, ни расшифровку: bottom line и действие для неё в первых строках (what you need to know, the action for you is); что подтверждают оба материала (both confirm); где заметка и звонок расходятся и почему это важно (the article says …, whereas the operator acknowledged on the phone that …; the survey did not ask about …); что только в одном (only the transcript mentions); каждое утверждение с меткой источника и уверенности (according to, states, acknowledged, is unverified / on record); одно объяснение простыми словами (in plain terms, to give you an idea); что опущено и что отмечено как риск (I've left out …, I should flag …).

Subject: Bus changes on 4 November — what you need to know
Dear Helen,
The bottom line: from 4 November the number 12 runs every twelve minutes, but the Mill Street stop — the school-run stop — is being removed, and the operator has told me the council asked for it to be kept. The action for you is to decide by Friday whether the parents' group writes to the council before the timetable is fixed.
Both the local news article and my call with the operator confirm the new frequency and the closure of the stop. They differ on scale. The article says journeys will be «up to eight minutes» faster; on the phone, the operator acknowledged that three to four minutes is typical and eight is the best case. The article calls the stop «little used»; the operator's own figure is about 90 boardings a day, mostly children, with the next stop 400 metres away — and she is on record that these figures are public.
Only the transcript mentions two things: the council asked the company to keep the stop, and the survey quoted as «welcomed by passengers» (210 online responses, 70 % in favour) did not ask about Mill Street at all. In plain terms, the stop closure has not been tested with passengers.
For your information, the 10p fare rise was decided separately and is not part of this change.
I've left out the seat figures and the route history. I should flag one risk: the «little used» label may be repeated by the council unless we send them the 90-a-day figure ourselves.
Best wishes,
Alex
