The table shows how residents of Northgate who work outside the home travelled to work in 2019 and 2024, as percentages of respondents, based on the town council's travel survey of just over 2,000 people each year.
The overall trend is a move away from driving alone. The share of solo car journeys fell sharply, by 12 percentage points, from 46 % to 34 %, whereas cycling more than doubled, from 7 % to 16 %, and walking rose from 17 % to 21 %. Bus, train and car sharing remained almost stable, changing by only one point each. The most striking figure is the age breakdown for cycling: the 16–24 group cycled at 24 %, almost five times the rate of the over-65s, at 5 %; the 25–44 and 45–64 groups stood at 19 % and 11 % respectively.
The rise in cycling coincided with the opening of the Station Road cycle lane in 2022, and this may be one explanation, although it cannot be concluded from the survey that the lane caused the change. It is also worth noting that the 2024 survey was carried out in May and the 2019 survey in November, which may favour cycling and walking in the later figures, and that home working — up from 4 % to 27 % — is not included in the table.
In summary, fewer residents drive alone and far more cycle, with the youngest group leading the change.
