The new town library on Station Road is due to open on 14 June, the council announced on Tuesday. The building, which cost £3.2 million, has three floors, a café and a room for children's events.
The project was delayed twice. Work stopped for four months in 2025 when the builders found problems with the roof, and the opening was moved from January to June. The council said that the extra work had cost £400,000, but that the final building was safer and better.
The mayor, Helen Ward, told the paper: «This is the most important project of the year. Libraries are not just about books — they are places where people meet.» Not everyone agrees. Local resident Mark Owen believes the money should have gone to the roads. «The library is nice,» he said, «but the roads are full of holes.»
In the meantime, the old library on High Street will stay open until 10 June. From 14 June, all books will be moved to the new building, and the opening hours will be longer: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays. The café is expected to open in July.
