Исправление: заметить непонимание и переформулировать
Непонимание — нормальная часть разговора на любом уровне. Важно его заметить (по лицу, по ответу не о том), признать (Sorry, I didn't make myself clear) и переформулировать проще: What I mean is …, let me put it another way, in other words. Слушающий, в свою очередь, уточняет: Do you mean …? Sorry, could you say that again?

Сравните с русским: «в смысле» — I mean; «то есть» — that is / in other words; «как это сказать по-английски?» — How do you say it in English? Не молчите: короткая простая фраза лучше длинной неверной.
Нюансы
- «I mean» отдельно — заполнитель паузы; «What I mean is» — сигнал переформулировки. Второе — полезнее.
- not quite смягчает: «That's not quite right» вежливее, чем «That's wrong».
- Do you mean …? с двумя вариантами (X or Y?) быстрее всего снимает непонимание.
- Переформулировка — это более простые слова и короче фраза, а не громче и медленнее то же самое.
