Обсуждение решения держит в одной фразе три плана: прошлое — что случилось и что было бы иначе (would have; at the time; in hindsight), открытое будущее — что ещё может произойти (may yet; by then; will have), и настоящую оценку (as things stand; so far; on present evidence). Грамматика: контрфактическое прошлое (would have + p.p.), открытая возможность (may / might yet), будущее завершённое (by then … will have), и разграничение «решение» / «исход» (judge the decision, not the outcome — решение было разумным на тот момент, даже если исход плох).

Ошибки новичков: одно время на все три плана; If we didn't sign, we would be free now → If we hadn't signed; we will overpay (об уже случившемся при исходе) → we will have overpaid; in the hindsight → in hindsight.
Нюансы
- may yet — «ещё может» с оттенком надежды; may still — нейтральнее.
- in hindsight / with hindsight / with the benefit of hindsight — равнозначны; «hindsight is 20/20» — клише.
- going forward — деловое клише; в письме лучше from now on / in future.
- at the time — защищает решение: оценивать по тому, что было известно тогда.
- Смешение планов («the wall will have saved» о 2019) — типичная ошибка; проверьте, какое время у каждого глагола.
