Ожидание и неожиданность: it turned out, apparently, in the end
Хорошая история строится на разнице между тем, чего ожидали (I'd expected …, presumably, she assumed …), и тем, что оказалось (it turned out, apparently, to my surprise, only to find). Развязка — in the end, sure enough (ожидание оправдалось) или as it happened.

| поворот | It turned out (that) … · Apparently, … · To my surprise, … · …, only to find (that) … | It turned out that the café had closed. I rushed back, only to find the shop had shut. |
| ожидание сбылось | Sure enough, … · As expected, … | Sure enough, the keys were in my pocket. |

Нюансы
- Little did I know — инверсия (did I), как у No sooner. Дальше — that + что было на самом деле.
- only to find ставится после действия с запятой: I rushed back, only to find …; выражает обманутое ожидание.
- apparently в начале — «как выяснилось / говорят»; в середине (he apparently missed) — «по-видимому».
- expect ≠ wait for: I expected a call (ожидал, что будет) — I waited for a call (ждал).
push_pinожидание: I'd expected, presumably, assumed; незнание: little did I know that; поворот: it turned out that / to be, apparently, to my surprise, only to find; сбылось: sure enough; развязка: in the end, as it happened
