Сложная мотивация: не столько … сколько, отчасти, ради, в ущерб
Простая мотивация — одна причина (because). Сложная — несколько причин разного веса, противоречие и цена решения. Для этого есть отдельные конструкции: not so much X as Y (уточняет главную причину), partly … partly (делит причину), much as (уступка: как бы ни хотел), for the sake of (ради кого), at the expense of (в ущерб чему), torn between (неразрешённый выбор).

Сравните с русским: «не столько…, сколько…» — точный аналог not so much … as; «ради» — for the sake of (не for the sake to); «в ущерб» — at the expense of.
Нюансы
- much as = although I very much: Much as I'd like to — «как бы мне ни хотелось». Не путать с as much as (столько же).
- for the sake of + сущ.; for my family's sake — с притяжательным.
- ambivalent — не «равнодушный», а «и хочу, и не хочу»; равнодушный — indifferent.
- torn — причастие от tear (рвать): I'm torn = разрываюсь; the paper is torn = порван.
- Русское «за счёт» в значении «благодаря» — thanks to / through, а не at the expense of (только «в ущерб»).
