Речь о причинах требует и связок (stem from, trigger, give rise to), и слов слоя.
|---|---|---|---|
| immediate cause | что запустило? | trigger · set off · spark | Heavy rain triggered the flood. |
| stem from · lie behind · be rooted in | The flooding stemmed from building on the floodplain. |
| root cause | что менять? | address · tackle · get to | The root cause is planning law that permits it. |
| contributing factor | что добавило? | contribute to · play a part in | Paved gardens contributed to the run-off. |
|---|---|---|
| downstream effect | отдалённый, ниже по цепочке | Downstream effects appear years later: insurance rises, people leave. |
| cumulative effect | накапливается с каждым разом | The damage is cumulative — each flood weakens the bank. |
| feedback loop | эффект усиливает причину | Melting ice exposes dark water, which absorbs heat — a feedback loop. |
| chain of events | последовательность | Trace the chain of events from rain to closed school. |
| in the long run / short run | горизонт | In the long run, prevention is cheaper. |
|---|---|
| immediate | The immediate cause of the flood was 80 mm of rain in six hours. |
| underlying | But the water had nowhere to go: the problem stems from thirty years of building on the floodplain and paving over gardens. |
| root | The root cause is a planning system that treats each house separately and never adds up the cumulative effect. |
| downstream | Downstream, insurance premiums have doubled, and in the long run the town will lose residents — a feedback loop, because fewer residents means less money for defences. |
| The immediate cause was three days of heavy rain.
| An underlying cause was building on the floodplain.
| The root cause is a planning system that rewards quick sales. |
| отдалённые эффекты | knock-on effects; side effects; in the long term | что будет потом и не там? | A knock-on effect is higher insurance for everyone. |
| петля | a vicious circle; feedback loop; self-reinforcing | усиливает ли следствие причину? | Cheaper land after floods attracts more building — a vicious circle. |
|---|---|
| The cause of the flood / the reason for the flood | |
| The main cause was the rain. / It flooded because it rained. | |
| an underlying / root cause | |
| a vicious circle (BrE) |
- root cause — из инженерной практики (root cause analysis); в речи — the real reason.
- Русское «в перспективе» — in the long run / in the long term; «в конечном счёте» — ultimately.
push_pinслои причин: immediate cause (trigger) → underlying cause (stem from, lie behind) → root cause (address, tackle) + contributing factor; эффекты: downstream, cumulative, feedback loop, chain of events; горизонт: in the long / short run

- The immediate cause of the flood was heavy rain, but the underlying cause was building on the floodplain.
- Address the root cause, not the symptom.
- Downstream effects appear years later, and the damage is cumulative.
- Melting ice creates a feedback loop.
- One dry summer triggered the fires.
- The problem stems from poor planning — trace the chain of events.
- In the long run, prevention is cheaper.
