Согласие с частью — сильнейший ход после опровержения: оно показывает честность и сужает спор до того, что действительно спорно. Форма: I concede / I grant X (полностью, без «but» в той же фразе); in that respect they are right; our common ground is …; the real disagreement is narrower: where we actually differ is Y; that leaves the question of Z — and only that. Разделите спор о фактах (решают данные) и о ценностях (могут остаться при своих: agree to differ). Гипотетическая уступка — for the sake of argument — позволяет проверить, держится ли ваш вывод даже при допущении чужой посылки.

| I concede three things. Year one costs money — the buses, the childcare, the lost Saturday jobs; I grant every figure my opponent gave. Some families would be worse off in that year; in that respect he is right. And the sleep gain, though real, is modest. Our common ground is therefore larger than our dispute: we both accept the science, and we both accept the cost. Where we actually differ is a single question — whether that cost is a reason against a trial or a reason to fund one. That leaves the question of who pays, and only that; the rest, the trial will settle. |

Образец: «I accept that a flat charge is regressive. Where we part company is the remedy: they conclude «no charge»; I conclude «a charge with exemptions». The disagreement is now about the exemption list, and that we can settle with data.» Ошибки новичков: I partly agree без указания части; where we differ is in → where we differ is …; I concede you that → I concede that.
Нюансы
- concede — уступить в споре; grant — допустить; acknowledge — признать факт (тема 68).
- Уступка в отдельной фразе; «but» — в следующей, и лучше «where we differ».
- agree to differ (брит.) / agree to disagree (амер.) — только о ценностях; о фактах — данные.
- for the sake of argument — уступка на время; после проверки её можно забрать.
- Суженный спор часто решается пробой (тема 66): «the trial will settle it» — лучший конец полемики.
