Связность — это когда каждое предложение «знает» о предыдущем. Три инструмента: отсылка местоимениями и словами-заменителями (this, these, such, it, the former / the latter, the same), перефразирование (in other words, to put it another way) и переход (which brings us to, having said that, in turn, as I mentioned). В речи они заменяют абзацы.

Нюансы
- this без существительного может быть неясным, если перед ним несколько идей; уточните: this figure / this gap.
- the former / the latter — только о двух; на слух воспринимаются хуже, чем повтор слов — в речи чаще «safety … cost …».
- having said that — уступка после сильного утверждения; = that said.
- in turn обособляется запятыми: Fewer cars, in turn, mean cleaner air.
