Hi Priya,
Just seen the notice about the evening classes — they're really shutting them in June? That's mad. I know the numbers are down, but half the people I know only started learning Spanish because the college was walkable and cheap. Moving everything online isn't «the same offer», whatever the letter says: the whole point was sitting in a room with other adults after work. I'm going to write to the principal. Not sure it'll change anything, but if enough of us do it, maybe. Do you know who actually made the decision — the college or the council? And is it true they've already let the room to a gym?

LETTER 2 — to the principal
Dear Dr Okafor,
I am writing regarding the decision to close the college's evening language classes from June, announced in last week's notice to students.
I understand that enrolment has fallen over the past two years and that the college is obliged to reduce costs. However, I would ask you to consider three points before the decision is finalised. First, the notice describes the online course as an equivalent offer; for many adult learners it is not, since the value of the classes lies largely in face-to-face practice with other learners after work. Second, the fall in numbers coincided with the move to a 7.30 start, which made attendance difficult for anyone finishing work at six; a return to the earlier time might well recover some of the lost students. Third, if the room has been let to a commercial tenant, as has been suggested, it would be helpful to know whether the income has been ring-fenced for adult education.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss these points, and I would be happy to help gather evidence of demand among current students.

First, a 9 pm start means finishing after ten, which is difficult for members with children and for anyone starting work early; several members have told me they would not be able to continue. Second, an 8 pm slot, if it were available even every other week, might well keep most of them. Third, it has been suggested that the Tuesday slot was offered to the club and declined; if that is the case, it would be helpful to know why, as many members would prefer Tuesday to a late Wednesday.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss this, and I would be happy to survey members about the times they could attend.
