Четыре типа разрыва: (1) посылка ложна (с контрпримером или данными); (2) посылка верна, но не относится к делу (true but irrelevant; does not bear on); (3) шаг не работает (the step from X to Y does not hold — пропущена посылка, сползание объёма, post hoc); (4) вывод сильнее, чем позволяют посылки. Форма: even granting the premise, … does not follow; I concede X and reject Y. И честность: what would change my mind is …

1. ложная посылкаthe premise is false: · a counterexample: · the figure is actuallyThe premise that villagers have no other way in is false: two villages have a school bus that runs on Saturdays.
2. верно, но не к делуtrue but irrelevant · does not bear onThe cost per passenger is true but irrelevant to whether demand exists.
3. шаг не работаетthe step from X to Y does not hold because … · even granting X, Y does not followEven granting that 40 % came by bus in 2019, it does not follow that they would now: the step ignores the retail park.
4. вывод сильнее посылокthe conclusion is stronger than the premises allow · the evidence supports X, not YThe evidence supports «a trial is worth running», not «the shuttle will restore trade».

I concede that 40 % of Saturday customers came from the villages in 2019. The step from that figure to «a bus will bring them back» does not hold, because it takes for granted that the retail park hasn't taken them for good — and that opened the same spring.
What survives is weaker but still useful: some village trade is recoverable, and we don't know how much.
условиеWhat would change my mind is a count of village customers who don't drive — if it's over a hundred, the bus is their only way in and the step holds.

The premise that … is questionable because …The premise that users cannot afford £2 is questionable: the survey asked about £5.
Even if X, it doesn't follow that YEven if the fare deters some users, it doesn't follow that cutting it is the best fix.
The argument slides from … to …The argument slides from «some riders» to «riders».
Correlation is treated as causationFalling use is treated as caused by the fare, though the route also changed.
This relies on the unstated assumption that …This relies on the unstated assumption that the council should subsidise fares.

The survey data are sound, and the fare is high for some.
The problem lies in the step from «high for some» to «should be cut for all».
A targeted discount would address the same need at a fraction of the cost.
What survives is the claim that affordability matters — not the remedy.

I don't agree with the argument без места; the argument is wrong → the argument fails at the step where …; it doesn't follow from that → it doesn't follow that. Сравните с русским: «слабое место довода» — the weak point / where the argument breaks down.

  • bear on — «иметь отношение к»; bear out — «подтверждать»; не путать.
  • even granting = even if we grant; формальный вариант — granted that.
  • counterexample — один достаточен против «all»; против «most» — нет.
  • «What would change my mind» —

push_pinчетыре разрыва: ложная посылка (counterexample), true but irrelevant (does not bear on), шаг не работает (the step from X to Y does not hold; even granting X, Y does not follow), вывод stronger than the premises allow; форма: изложить → concede → pinpoint the step → чем показать → what survives → what would change my mind

  • The step from «cheap» to «worth doing» is where it fails; the inference does not hold without the missing premise.
  • True but irrelevant: the cost doesn't bear on demand.
  • The conclusion is stronger than the premises allow — the evidence supports a trial, not a permanent service.
  • One counterexample breaks a universal claim.
  • Even granting the premise, the conclusion doesn't follow — I concede the premise and reject the inference.
  • What would change my mind is a count of non-drivers.
  • Pinpoint the step, not the whole argument.

lightbulbСильное возражение указывает место: ложная посылка (counterexample) / true but irrelevant / the step from X to Y does not hold (even granting X) / stronger than the premises allow. Форма: concede → pinpoint → чем показать → what survives → what would change my mind.
