Чужой аргумент: точное изложение перед ответом
Ответ на довод начинается с его точного изложения — такого, с которым согласился бы автор (a fair summary). Это защищает от подмены тезиса (straw man: ответить на ослабленную версию) и заставляет ответить на сильнейшую (steelman). Форма: as I understand it / if I've got this right, довод в виде посылок и вывода своими словами, суть (the thrust of), проверка (is that a fair summary?; correct me if I'm wrong) — и только потом ответ, по существу (engage with the argument, not the person).

Ошибки новичков: пересказ сильнее оригинала (Baker proves вместо argues); пересказ с оценкой (Baker naively claims); ответ раньше изложения; According to Baker says → According to Baker, … Сравните с русским: «если я правильно понял» — if I've understood correctly / if I've represented this fairly.
Нюансы
- straw man — существительное и глагол: to straw-man an argument; в британском также Aunt Sally.
- steelman — новый термин (2010-е), употребим в речи и в блогах; в академическом письме — «the strongest version of the argument».
- the thrust of — основная направленность; не «thrust» без of.
- Проверка «is that a fair summary?» — вопрос, на который ждут ответа; после «yes» подмена невозможна.
- Изложение чужого довода не значит согласия: «you're saying that» — нейтрально.
