Глаголы связи (correlate with, be associated with, go hand in hand, coincide) утверждают, что два явления меняются вместе; глаголы причины (cause, bring about, lead to, be responsible for, drive) — что одно вызывает другое.

Bus cuts correlate with falling trade.

contribute to · play a part in · be a factor in
The cut contributed to the fall.
причина
cause · bring about · lead to · be responsible for · drive · trigger
The cut brought about the fall.

The cut accounts for the whole fall.

пример
confounding factor
The retail park opened the same spring: it may explain both fewer bus users and less trade.
reverse causation
Fewer shoppers → the route lost money → the bus was cut.
mechanism
No bus → no way in for non-drivers → no purchase.
A точно раньше B?
Did trade start falling before or after the cut?
доза
больше A — больше B?
Did the villages that lost more services lose more customers?

The fall coincided with the cut.
Cuts are associated with lower trade.
The cut is likely to have contributed to the fall.
The cut caused about a third of the fall.

Screen time is associated with poorer sleep.

Screen time causes poorer sleep.

X is associated with Y.
X is likely to contribute to Y.
X causes Y under these conditions.
X causes Y.
Ошибки новичков: correlates to → correlates with; linked with → linked to (обе формы встречаются, to чаще); influences on → affects; заголовочное «X linked to Y» читать как «X causes Y».
correlate with — глагол; correlation between A and B — существительное; «correlate to» встречается, но with — стандарт.
post hoc — сокращение от post hoc ergo propter hoc; в речи — «that's post hoc».
confound — глагол: the retail park confounds the comparison.
«No single factor is responsible» —
push_pinсвязь (correlate with, be associated with, go hand in hand, coincide) ≠ вклад (contribute to) ≠ причина (cause, bring about, lead to, be responsible for) ≠ единственная причина (account for); post hoc; проверки: confounding factor, reverse causation, mechanism, время, доза; глагол по силе данных

Bus cuts correlate with falling trade, and longer opening hours are associated with more visits.
Footfall and trade go hand in hand — which causes which?
The cut brought about the fall — or did the retail park? No single factor is responsible for the decline.
The retail park is a confounding factor; reverse causation is possible: fewer shoppers, so the bus was cut.
The cut coincided with the retail park's opening.
«Trade fell after the cut, so the cut did it» — post hoc.«Торговля упала после отмены, значит, из-за отмены» — post hoc.
Name the mechanism: no bus, no way in, no purchase.
lightbulbСвязь (correlate with, be associated with, coincide) → вклад (contribute to) → причина (cause, bring about, be responsible for). Перед «causes»: confounding factor? reverse causation? mechanism?
