Три типа: своя ошибка — no, sorry — I meant; or rather; what I should have said; чужое искажение — that's not quite what I said; I think you've misheard; just to be clear; разговор о разном (cross purposes) — are we talking about X or Y?; I think we're talking about two different things. Правило: исправление короче, чем ошибка; без обвинения («you misunderstood» → «I wasn't clear»); и сразу назад в нить.

Самокоррекция как норма речи: носители поправляют себя постоянно, коротко и без извинений; длинное извинение привлекает внимание к ошибке. Ошибки новичков: Excuse me, I have made a mistake → sorry, 200; You didn't understand me → Not quite — I meant …; замолкать после оговорки вместо того, чтобы продолжить.
Нюансы
- that's not quite what I said — без обвинения; «you're twisting my words» — конфликт.
- I think you've misheard — мягче, чем «you're wrong»; ответственность на акустике.
- cross purposes — идиома: at cross purposes; выход — назвать обе темы.
- Уточнение числа — всегда: «fifteen, not fifty» — цена ошибки высока (тема 71).
