Краткий пересказ: главное без копирования
Пересказ — не повторение каждой фразы, а главное своими словами: событие, кто, итог, что это значит для слушателя. Детали (точные цифры, второстепенные имена) можно опустить. Помогают связки обобщения (in short, basically, the main point is) и косвенная речь для чужих слов.

Сравните с русским: в пересказе английский держит подлежащее впереди (The bridge is closing), а не «закрывают мост»; длинные книжные слова (closure, approximately) меняются на разговорные (is closing, about).
Нюансы
- Пересказ короче оригинала минимум вдвое; если он длиннее — это не пересказ.
- Точные цифры округляйте: 40 % → a lot, 12 tonnes → a heavy lorry, 6.40 → early in the morning — если цифра не главное.
- basically в речи часто лишнее слово-паразит; в пересказе — уместно один раз в начале.
- gist читается /dʒɪst/; in a nutshell — разговорно, в письме — in short / to sum up.
