Несогласованные элементы: сравнение, параллелизм и согласование
Три вида несогласованности. Неверное сравнение (faulty comparison): сравниваются разнородные вещи — «footfall was higher than last year» (посещаемость с годом); правка — than that of / than those of / than last year's. Нарушенный параллелизм: элементы списка или пары в разной форме — «to read, writing and speech»; парные союзы (not only … but also; either … or; both … and; neither … nor) должны соединять однородное (like with like). Согласование подлежащего и сказуемого: собирательные (the committee has / have — по смыслу, но последовательно), neither … nor (глагол по ближайшему), «one of the X who …» (мн.), «the number of» (ед.) / «a number of» (мн.).

Ошибки новичков: than competitors при сравнении цен; the number of … have; one of the reasons are → is; the staff is — в BrE staff чаще мн. ч.: the staff are. Как проверять: подчеркните ядро подлежащего и члены списка.
Нюансы
- than that of — формально; в речи «than last year's» естественнее.
- Парный союз ставят непосредственно перед тем, что он соединяет: not only cheaper but also faster; not only is it cheaper but it is also faster (инверсия — тема 53).
- Британский английский чаще берёт множественное с collective (the team are); главное — последовательность в тексте.
- «One of the councillors who were present» — who относится к councillors; «the only one of … who was» — к one.
- Несовпадение в списке — частая причина «что-то не так» у читателя без понимания, что именно.
