Академическое определение (тема 58: «X is defined as …») неспециалисту не помогает — ему нужно бытовое: «Inflation is when the same money buys less», «think of it as a thermostat», «a kind of rehearsal». И обязательно — конкретный пример с числами: «a coffee that cost £2 now costs £2.20».
|---|---|---|
X is when … · X is what happens when … · basically, X is … | Inflation is when the same money buys less. |
| образ | think of it as · a kind of · it's like (урок 4) | Think of it as a thermostat for prices. |
| конкретный пример | for instance · say · take · with numbers | For instance, a coffee that cost £2 now costs £2.20. |
| термин после | the technical term is · what economists call | The technical term is «progressive». |
| перевод регистра | in everyday terms · in plain English | In everyday terms, it's a rainy-day fund. |
| пометка неточности | strictly speaking · technically · roughly speaking | Strictly speaking, a tomato is a fruit. |
| термин | «X is when» | пример |
|---|---|---|
| progressive tax | a tax is progressive when the rate goes up as you earn more | on £20,000 you pay 20 %; on £60,000 you pay 40 % on the part above £50,000 |
| placebo | a placebo is a fake treatment that looks real | a sugar pill given to half the patients |
| compound interest | compound interest is when you earn interest on your interest | £100 at 10 %: £110, then £121, not £120 |

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level. | Inflation is when the same money buys less. |

|---|---|---|---|
| inflation | a sustained rise in the general price level | when the same money buys less than it did | Your £5 coffee costs £5.30 next year. |
| interest rate | the cost of borrowing expressed as a percentage | what the bank charges you for a loan, or pays you for savings | Borrow £100 at 5 % — you pay back £105. |
| algorithm | a finite sequence of instructions | a recipe a computer follows | The feed shows friends' posts first because a rule says so. |

Inflation is a rise in the CPI. | … when the same money buys less. |
| слишком широко | Inflation is when things change in the economy.
| только пример | Inflation is like your coffee getting dearer.
Inflation is when … | Inflation means … / Inflation is the situation in which … |
Обороты: in plain English, …; put simply, …; that is, …; think of it as …; for example, … Ошибки новичков: simply saying → put simply; in simple words → in plain English / in simple terms.
- X is when — разговорно; в письменном объяснении — X is what happens when / X means that.
(X is when, basically, think of it as, a kind of) → конкретный пример с круглыми числами (for instance) → термин после (the technical term is) → регистр (in everyday terms) → пометка неточности (strictly speaking, technically); не термин через термин
