Специальный текст сжимает действия в существительные (тема 49: номинализация) и прячет действующих лиц пассивом: «Eligibility determination is subject to means-testing prior to allocation». Неспециалисту нужно обратное — раскрыть (unpack): кто что делает, в каком порядке, при каком условии. Ошибки новичков: раскрыть, но оставить пассив без деятеля (fares were put off); заменить одно длинное слово другим длинным (commencement → initiation); prior to start → before you start / prior to starting. Сравните с русским: наш канцелярит устроен так же («осуществление снижения»), и лечится так же: найти глагол и того, кто действует.
Нюансы
- Раскрытие удлиняет текст — это нормально; плотность и понятность обратно связаны.
- Сохраняйте условия при раскрытии: «case by case» = «нет фиксированного правила» — это важно адресату (урок 5).
- plain English — движение за понятные документы; в Британии есть стандарт Plain English Campaign.
- Сначала «кто что делает», потом «при каком условии», потом «когда» — порядок восприятия.
- that is (= i.e.) — уточнение; for example (= e.g.) — пример; не путайте (тема 40).
