Каждый источник силён в пределах своей компетенции (within its remit) и слаб вне её. Формула силы: source X establishes / shows / suggests A for B (объект) over C (период) — no more. За пределами — overreach: «the bypass saved the town» из подсчёта трафика. Источник может не касаться (does not speak to) вопроса или молчать (silent on) о части; иметь прямое или косвенное отношение (bearing). Заинтересованный источник (торговцы) может быть прав в своих данных — проверяют данные, не мотив (тема 60). Экстраполяция с двенадцати магазинов на город — шаг, который делает читатель, а не источник; помечайте, кто его сделал.

Нюансы
- remit — «круг полномочий»; within / outside its remit.
- speak to — «касаться, относиться к» (амер. по происхождению, теперь общее).
- overreach — существительное и глагол; в рецензировании — стандартное замечание.
- Сила — не то же, что надёжность: слабый по охвату источник может быть безупречен внутри охвата.
- Свою экстраполяцию помечайте: «I extrapolate, cautiously» (тема 60).
