Двусмысленность (ambiguity) бывает лексической (visiting relatives — «навещать» или «навещающие»), синтаксической (the man saw the woman with the telescope — у кого телескоп), отсылочной (this, they, the former / the latter) и объёмной (only, not all, virtually — уроки 2–4). На C2 её снимают не переписыванием абзаца, а одним уточнением: that is to say, namely, in the sense that, as opposed to, to be precise, respectively, which is not to say.
|---|---|---|
Visiting relatives can be tiring. | Relatives who visit — as opposed to visits to them — can be tiring. |
The council rejected the plan and the petition, which surprised nobody. | …, and the petition; the latter surprised nobody. |
The operator met the chair after she had spoken to the press. | … after the chair had spoken to the press. |
The plan worked. | The plan worked, in the sense that nobody complained — which is not to say footfall rose. |
A and B cost £22,000 and £7,000. | … £22,000 and £7,000 respectively. |

|---|---|
| When I say the plan worked, what I mean to say is that it worked in a certain way, which is that nobody complained about it. | The plan worked, in the sense that nobody complained. |
| There were two sources, and these two sources were the survey on the one hand and the till records on the other hand. | Two sources, namely the survey and the till records. |
|---|---|---|---|
| лексическая (слово) | visiting relatives can be tiring | навещать родных / приезжающие родные | Visits to relatives … / Relatives who visit … |
| синтаксическая (структура) | the man saw the girl with the telescope | у кого телескоп? | the man used the telescope to see the girl / the girl who had the telescope |
| отсылка (местоимение) | Anna told Kate that she was late. | Anna told Kate, «You're late.» / Anna admitted to Kate that she was late. |
| область действия | old men and women | только мужчины старые или все? | old men and old women / women and old men |
| отрицание | I didn't go because of the rain. урок 2 | I stayed in because of the rain. / I went, but not because of the rain. |
|---|---|
| that is, …; i.e. | the report — that is, the March version — … |
| namely | two people, namely Anna and Kate |
| the former / the latter | Anna told Kate that the latter was late. |
| respectively | Anna and Kate arrived at 9 and 10 respectively. |
Anna told Kate that Kate was late. |
With the telescope, the man saw the girl. |
(Anna told Kate that she, Kate, not Anna, was late) вместо перестройки; the last вместо the latter; respectively в начале фразы.
- the former / the latter — только для двух; для трёх — the first / the second / the last.
- which is not to say — отсекает вывод, который читатель сделал бы сам; ставьте сразу после утверждения.
- Qualifier («Saturday», «street», «per hour»)
push_pinтипы двусмысленности: лексическая, синтаксическая, отсылочная, объёмная, числовая; снять одним уточнением: that is to say, namely, in the sense that, which is not to say, as opposed to, to be precise, respectively, the former / the latter; сохранять qualifier (Saturday, per hour)
