Cleft-конструкция It is … that: выделить одно и отодвинуть остальное
Обычная фраза сообщает всё разом: The contrast makes the scene work. Cleft (расщеплённая) конструкция делит её на две части и ставит ударение на одну: It is the contrast that makes the scene work — «именно контраст». Всё остальное подаётся как уже известное. В рецензии это инструмент точности: не «фильм хорош», а «именно X делает его хорошим». Выделить можно подлежащее, дополнение, обстоятельство — не глагол.

Ошибки новичков: It's the music what makes → that; It is the actors who saves it → save; Exactly the music makes the scene (калька с «именно») → It's the music that makes the scene. Сравните с русским: наше «именно», «как раз» — по-английски чаще всего cleft, а не слово.
Нюансы
- Cleft — не «It is a good film that …» (оценка в первой части) — выделяется предмет, а не его качество.
- Глагол выделить нельзя: для этого — pseudo-cleft (урок 3): What the film does is …
- Не больше одной cleft-конструкции на абзац — иначе всё «именно», и ничего не выделено.
- В речи ударение делает голос; cleft нужен там, где голоса нет — в письме.
- Русское «именно» = precisely / exactly внутри cleft: It is precisely … that.
